Dr. Matthew Tytherleigh received his medical training at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, and completed his higher surgical training at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, under the supervision of Professor Neil Mortenson. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS – General Surgery) in 2006. He conducted advanced research at Oxford’s Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine under Professor Sir Walter Bodmer, earning a Doctor of Medicine (MD) for his thesis titled “The Antibody Treatment of Colorectal Cancer.”
Dr. Matthew completed his Colorectal Fellowship Year at the Concord Hospital in Sydney, Australia, under Professor Les Bokey. He was awarded the Covidien Laparoscopic Colorectal Traveling Fellowship three years later at the same facility. He also received a Royal College of Surgeons Research Fellowship, an Oxfordshire Research Grant, and travel Fellowships to Stockholm, Grenada, and Melbourne. After completing his training, he was appointed as a Locum Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, followed by a substantive appointment at Ipswich Hospital.
After five years at The Ipswich Hospital, Dr Matthew moved to Burjeel Hospital, Abu Dhabi, where he has worked for the last 11 years. He will continue his clinical practice in Burjeel Hospital and Harley Street Medical Centre.
Dr. Matthew has played a critical role in enhancing guest safety and clinical governance, implementing various initiatives, including an enhanced recovery program. He was awarded a Clinical Excellence Award in 2011 for this work.

Dr. Matthew is a co-author of the Colorectal Surgery chapter in The New Aird’s Companion to Surgical Studies, the standard surgical training textbook in the UK. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed research papers and has delivered more than 30 national and international presentations.
