Dr Matthew Tytherleigh is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon with extensive experience in colorectal surgery, specialist proctology and advanced colonoscopy. He practises in Abu Dhabi and has particular expertise in the assessment and surgical treatment of conditions affecting the colon, rectum and anus.

His specialist proctology practice includes the diagnosis and treatment of haemorrhoids, anal fissure, anal fistula and abscess, rectal prolapse, faecal incontinence and pelvic floor disorders. He also has extensive experience in colorectal cancer surgery, laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal surgery, inflammatory bowel disease and colitis, and advanced colonoscopy.

Dr Matthew received his medical and surgical training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London and completed his surgical training at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, under the supervision of Professor Neil Mortensen. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 2006.

He undertook his research at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Oxford, under the supervision of Professor Sir Walter Bodmer, and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree for his research dissertation, “The Antibody Treatment of Colorectal Cancer.”

He subsequently completed a Colorectal Fellowship at Concord Hospital in Sydney, Australia, under Professor Les Bokey. Three years later, he was awarded the Covidien Laparoscopic Colorectal Travelling Fellowship at the same institution. He has also received a Royal College of Surgeons Research Fellowship, an Oxfordshire Research Grant, and travelling fellowships to Stockholm, Grenada and Melbourne.

Following completion of his specialist training, Dr Matthew was appointed as a Locum Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, followed by a substantive Consultant Colorectal Surgeon appointment at Ipswich Hospital.

Throughout his consultant career, he has contributed to clinical governance and patient safety and has implemented initiatives including an enhanced recovery programme. He was awarded a Clinical Excellence Award in 2011 in recognition of this work.

Dr Matthew has co-authored the Colorectal Surgery chapter in The New Aird’s Companion to Surgical Studies, a recommended surgical trainee textbook in the United Kingdom. He has published more than 20 research articles and has presented his work on more than 30 occasions nationally and internationally.

His combination of specialist colorectal surgical training, academic research and extensive clinical experience allows him to provide comprehensive assessment and treatment for patients with colorectal and proctological conditions, from common anal conditions such as haemorrhoids and fissures through to complex colorectal surgical problems.
