Shingles Vaccine

What is Shingles?

Shingles, medically known as herpes zoster, is a painful rash condition caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus—the same virus responsible for chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in the body and can resurface later in life, especially when the immune system weakens with age.

Shingles Symptoms

Who is at Risk?

  • Over 95% of people aged 50 and older already carry the virus that causes shingles.
  • 1 in 3 adults will develop shingles in their lifetime.
  • The chance of recurrence increases with age or a compromised immune system.
  • Since the virus is already in your body, you can’t avoid shingles by avoiding contact with others.

Common Symptoms of Shingles:

  • Painful skin rash with blisters
  • Burning or tingling sensation
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Fever or headache in some cases
  • In severe cases, long-term nerve pain known as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).
