Major symptoms include:
- Hallucinations (typically hearing voices)
- Delusions
- Disorganized thinking and behavior
- Social withdrawal
- Decreased emotional expression, and apathy.
Symptoms typically develop gradually, begin during young adulthood, and in many cases never become resolved.
Treatment
People with schizophrenia require lifelong treatment. Early treatment may help get symptoms under control before serious complications develop and may help improve the long-term outlook.
